Let’s get metric S.M.A.R.T.

If there’s one thing we all have to get better at, it’s writing objectives and sticking to them.

Google “communication objectives” and you’ll find very few, worked examples that link to the broader business objectives. Our mission has become to convert Communication Specialists/ Managers and PR practitioners to the excitement (and relief!) that comes from a SMART objective.

We know we all know the theory but when was the last time you actually wrote a SMART objective and were truly prepared to be accountable or even incentivised for meeting or exceeding the explicit target through your own performance?

“How can we possibly commit to a 20% increase when we don’t know the baseline”, we hear you murmur.

“How can we commit to that result when there are so many factors beyond our control”, you defend.

The bottom line is that if we truly want to prove our value to our organisations, we have to be accountable to the same standards as the rest of our organisation performs. We have to become smarter which doesn’t mean abandoning our creativity. We need to revel in the transparency that measurement provides and that starts with being SMART in all we do.

  • To achieve a reputation rating of at least 75% among our company’s key stakeholders by 30 June 2017.
  • To create a favourable attitude among more than 50% of potential users of the new telecommunications service within the target area by 30 June 2017.
  • To increase to 85% the extent of staff awareness of the organisation’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy by 30 June 2017.
  • To attract at least 200 downloads for the $2 million grant funding initiative by 31 December 2016.
